Statement From Missouri Democratic Party Chair Russ Carnahan On The Passing Of Congressman Clay Sr.

July 17, 2025

The Missouri Democratic Party mourns the passing of Congressman William Lacy Clay Sr., a trailblazer whose legacy forever changed the political landscape of Missouri and the nation.

As Missouri’s first Black member of Congress, Congressman Clay shattered barriers and gave voice to communities too long ignored. For over three decades, he was a fearless champion for civil rights, working families, organized labor, and equal opportunity. He didn’t just talk about justice, he legislated it, fought for it, and inspired a generation to do the same.

Congressman Clay laid the groundwork for so many who came after him. His legacy endures in the laws he helped enact, the leaders he mentored, and the lives he touched. Missouri Democrats extend our deepest condolences to the entire Clay family, especially his son, former Congressman Lacy Clay, Jr., who carried his father’s torch with the same unwavering commitment to public service.
