Missouri Democrats Slam Josh Hawley for Misleading Voters, Backing GOP Bill That Guts Medicaid
June 30, 2025
Missouri Democrats are calling out Senator Josh Hawley for his misleading public statements and newfound support for Senate Republicans’ sweeping domestic policy bill, which would gut Medicaid, hike home energy costs, and devastate rural hospitals.
Just days after telling Missourians he opposed the legislation because it was ‘morally wrong’ to gut Medicaid, Hawley reversed course and voted in lockstep with Republican leadership to advance the bill.
“Josh Hawley tried to have it both ways by pretending to oppose a bill that he now says he’ll support because he knows it will hurt Missouri,” said Russ Carnahan, Chair of the Missouri Democratic Party. “This bill is a slap in the face to working families. It guts health care, raises costs across the board, and gives more tax breaks to the wealthy and well-connected. Missouri deserves leaders who stand up for them, not ones who lie to their faces and vote the way their rich friends tell them to.”
Reports show the devastating impact of the GOP plan on Missouri:
- $2.1 billion in higher home energy costs over the next 10 years
- 37,400 jobs lost by 2035
- $27 billion hit to Missouri’s economy
- 250,000 Missourians at risk of losing their health coverage
The proposal also threatens to shutter rural hospitals, gut Medicaid, and raise the cost of living for working families across the state.
“Missourians are paying attention and they won’t forget who stood with them and who sold them out,” Carnahan added.
