Missouri Democratic Party Statement on the Passing of Former Governor and Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond
May 13, 2025,
St. Louis, MO — Today, we mourn the loss of former Governor and Senator Kit Bond, one of Missouri's most influential political leaders. With a career that spanned over four decades, Kit was a tireless advocate for Missouri’s people, serving both as governor and U.S. Senator. His legacy as a statesman, reformer, and dedicated public servant is woven into the fabric of our state's history.
“Kit's service to Missouri was defined by his deep commitment to improving the lives of our citizens, whether through securing vital infrastructure projects or supporting critical economic initiatives. He was a man of principle, integrity, and, above all, love for the people of Missouri. His leadership set a high bar for future generations, and he leaves behind a powerful example of dedication and resilience,” said Missouri Democratic Party Chair Russ Carnahan.
“Kit’s humor, warmth, and willingness to listen made him a friend to many. His unique approach to politics and policy made him a true force in both state and national government. He always put the needs of Missourians first, and he never lost sight of the people he worked for. Kit believed, as I do, that public service is an honor, and he lived that belief daily. Today, I am reminded of what my late mother and former Senator Jean Carnahan wrote of Kit’s service:
'On the national scene, Missouri’s senior senator remains an advocate of family issues. He was a strong supporter of Head Start, Family and Medical Leave legislation, and the Parents as Teachers program. The National Journal labeled him 'a conservative with a soft spot for cities and housing.' Colleagues give him high marks for his gregarious manner and efforts to find solutions that work. One Democratic senator noted, '[Bond] always tries to form alliances in the sensible center'—a trait that has served him well both in the nation’s capital and with his midwestern constituency.' - If Walls Could Talk, Jean Carnahan
“As we reflect on Kit’s remarkable contributions to our state, I join with Missourians from all walks of life in sending my deepest condolences to his wife, Linda, his family, and all who knew and loved him. My thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Missouri has lost a giant, and while we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the enduring impact of his work and the example he set for all who aspire to serve.”
