Senator Amy Klobuchar to join Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and the Missouri Democratic Party in condemning illegal gerrymandering effort

August 29, 2025

The Missouri Democratic Party and its elected officials strongly oppose Governor Mike Kehoe’s calling of a special legislative session to even further gerrymander  Missouri’s congressional districts—an effort clearly aimed at benefiting Republican politicians at the expense of fair representation of Missouri citizens. This comes after a long pattern of Missouri Republicans overturning the will of voters.

“This move represents an alarming abuse of power and a blatant attempt to rig the electoral map for partisan gain,” said Russ Carnahan, chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party. “Rather than focusing on the pressing needs of Missourians, Republican leaders are bowing down to Washington politicians, playing political games and working behind closed doors to rig the rules in their favor because they are afraid of voter backlash in the midterm election from their unpopular agenda benefitting billionaires at the expense of working families. Missourians deserve better from the elected officials pushing for these changes.”

At the center of this plan is an effort to dismantle fair representation in Missouri’s communities.

The governor’s lack of transparency, paired with the growing influence of national political operatives in Missouri’s redistricting process, is deeply troubling. Missourians deserve to know what changes are being proposed to their representation—and why. Citizens are not pawns in a partisan power play, and we will not stand by while our democracy is undermined.

Missouri Democrats Demand:

  1. Transparency. The public deserves to see any proposed map in full—not hidden, insider drafts.
  2. Public Input. Missourians should have a seat at the table—not locked out of decisions that shape their political voice.
  3. Respect for Democracy. Redistricting must reflect fair, nonpartisan values—not be weaponized to entrench power.
  4. Veto Session Clarity. The Democratic Party demands assurance that no redistricting plans will be rammed through without open debate.

About the Missouri Democratic Party:

The Missouri Democratic Party fights for fair elections, representative democracy, and policies that benefit all Missouri families—not just the privileged few. We believe every Missourian deserves a government that listens to, respects, and reflects their community’s needs—not one that cuts them out of the process.
