Missouri Democrats Celebrate 60th Anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare, Condemn GOP Threats to Healthcare
July 30, 2025
The Missouri Democratic Party celebrates the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare and condemns Republican attacks on these programs. Since 1965, Medicaid and Medicare have transformed the health and financial security of millions of Americans.
Today, more than 1 million Missourians rely on these programs to access critical care, but instead of celebrating this milestone, Missouri Republicans are working to tear it down. Just this month, Missouri Republicans in Congress joined their party in voting for a federal budget plan that would slash Medicaid funding to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy elite. Their votes directly undermine care for families in every corner of the state.
“Medicaid and Medicare are two of the most successful government programs in American history. They have saved lives, kept rural hospitals open, and provided peace of mind to millions of Missouri families,” said Missouri Democratic Party Chair Russ Carnahan. “Missouri Republicans are trying to rip that away, not because the programs don’t work, but because their wealthy donors want bigger tax breaks. It’s a disgrace.”
Missourians are already seeing the consequences. From rising hospital closures to families scrambling to keep coverage for children with complex medical needs, the Republican agenda is creating real harm. Democrats will continue to defend Medicaid and Medicare against partisan attacks and fight for a future where everyone, no matter their income or zip code, can get the care they deserve.
