Missouri Democratic Party Endorses “NO” on Amendment 5

JEFFERSON CITY, MO — On June 23rd, the Missouri Democratic Party’s State Committee — made up of Missourians from all every corner of the state — voted to formally and unanimously endorse a “NO” vote on Amendment 5.
Amendment 5 is a scam that working-families in Missouri cannot afford. If Amendment 5 passes, Missouri’s tax burden would be shifted almost entirely on to working-families, military families, and retirees.
"This isn't a tax cut, it's shifting the burden of the state’s bills onto regular working families, retirees, and veterans," said Russ Carnahan, chair of the Missouri Democratic Party. "The people writing this want to eliminate the big tax they pay and then increase the taxes you pay to survive to make up for the massive hole they are blowing in our budget.”
The Missouri Democratic Party thanks the record number of Democratic candidates running in 97.4% of state and federal races across the state for their work as messengers on this critical issue and for being leading voices in the fight to protect voter power.
“Missourians will not be tricked into paying more taxes by a race-car commercial or an underbaked plan. Read what the amendment actually says. You won’t find their promises in the question you’re being asked to vote on — just permission to give politicians more powers to tax the regular folk who make our state special,” said Chair Russ Carnahan. “This blows a hole in the Hancock Amendment, designed to protect Missouri tax payers from overreach by politicians.”
The Missouri Democratic Party, in alignment with our fight to make a more fair economy and democracy, urges every Missouri voter — regardless of party affiliation — to “NO” on Amendment 5 in the upcoming August 4, 2026 election
